How to become a Battalion Four Firefighter

Applications for the Grand Traverse Rural Fire Department Battalion Five are obtained in the central fire office at 897 Parsons Road (at Three Mile) in Traverse City. Upon receipt of application, criminal and driving records are reviewed and interviews conducted. You will be required within eighteen (18) months of hire to obtain Michigan FFI & FFII certification. Michigan FFI & FFII School is scheduled annually beginning in October with final testing in April. The training is held locally at the Regional Fire Training Center on Nimrod Rd. Reference the Battalion Firelighter's job descriptions for specific qualifications and responsibilities.

Qualifications of a Probationary Member:

1. Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
2. Must have a valid Michigan drivers license with limited points.
3. Must not be a convicted felon.
4. Must pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen.
5. Must successfully complete FFI as soon as a course is available or be in a class and/or complete course within 18 months of hire date.


Responsibilities of a Probationary Member

1. Will become a probationary Firefighter after successful completion of FFI.
2. Must not participate in Fire suppression activities including hose lines and S.C.B.A. use until successful completion of FFl.
3. Will be expected to clean and repack all equipment after fire calls.
4. Will be expected to perform miscellaneous duties as assigned by the Officers.
5. Must follow all policy and procedures of the Department.
6. Must attend all monthly meetings and trainings unless is excused prior to meeting/training by an Officer.
7. Will be reviewed quarterly by the Officers.
8. Must maintain a 10% run quota.
9. Points will not be accumulated during probationary period (6 months).


Qualifications of a Firefighter

1. Successful completion of probationary Firefighter requirements and I year of Fire department service and FFI training.
2. Encouraged to obtain a M.F.R. license.
3. Must be approved to operate and drive emergency vehicles by the departments Officers.



Responsibilities of a Firelighter:

1. Must respond to fire calls and operate all pumps and equipment Must be able to lay and connect hoses, operate nozzles, raise and climb ladders, use axes in a safe and effective manner, don an SCBA. use hand tools as directed and perform all the above functions as training permits in a safe and effective manner.
2. Perform all fire operations in a safe and effective manner and always exercise precaution to avoid unnecessary damage to life and properties.
3. Must operate and care for all fire department equipment in a safe and proper way.
4. Extinguishes fire and protects lives and property against the hazard of fire.
5. Must attend monthly meetings and trainings unless an excused absence is granted by an Officer PRIOR to meeting.
6. Must obey all orders as directed by an Officer on a fire scene and in the absence of an Officer on a fire scene, must follow the directions of a senior firefighter until the arrival of an Officer.
7. Shall obey all Michigan driving laws for emergency vehicles and must always follow department rules and regulations while responding to all calls.
8. Must direct all public information questions to the Officer in charge of the scene.
9. Shall maintain a good working relationship with all department members.
10. Will perform miscellaneous duties as assigned by an Officer.
11. Must maintain a 10% run quota.
12. Zero activity (unexcused) in any three month period will result in termination.
